I messaged Backwater Tarpon prior to booking to make sure it would be appropriate for a very new fly fisherman. I was quickly notified which day and time would be best with the forecast. Capt Fernando Montalvo was very patient with me. He made sure I had a satisfactory cast prior to bringing me to the lagoon to cast over fish! We caught two fish while Capt Fernando did his best to push us around the lagoon and set me up for success!

Great day!!! Captain put us on the fish. Great boat and gear. Guides were fun and patient with us as we learned the nuances of salt water fly fishing. They really knew their stuff and worked hard for us. Lots of bites and we did land one fish. Learn the art of the strip set and you’ll boat more fish then we did. Totally recommend this trip

Booked a last minute 6 hour trip for my girlfriend and I. She hung out on the boat and I fly fished the whole time. Tommy was a great guy to hang out with, we both felt safe and comfortable the whole time, and we both had a ton of fun. I was hesitant to book a trip with any of the San Juan tarpon guide services after seeing pictures of bleeding adult tarpon dragged into the boat and laying across peoples laps. Tarpon deserve respect! I chose to go with Backwater Fly Fishing Charters because they were the only guys who left the big fish in the water, handling and releasing them safely! Fishing with Captain Tommy was great. We were on fish the whole time, we got plenty of bites, and we landed multiple tarpon on fly. Beyond that, I could Captain Tommy loves and respects tarpon, and I learned a lot about chasing tarpon with a fly! For tourists fishing bait who just want to pull on big fish, I’m sure these guys are great. For real fly fishermen who want the complete experience and who care about the fish, this is 110% the guys to go with.
He was great. Put me on fish right from the start. He even went into the water to get my first ever tarpon wrapped around a mangrove root. End of the trip hooked up with a large fish. Way more power than the trout I normally fly fish. Several other opportunities in between. I look forward to fishing with him again.

Easy booking Captain ready to go, knowledgeable, patient, great coaching.

We were down in PR for a business trip and booked some fly fishing. Captin was knowledgeable and the weather was great. Saw a few fish but not a ton and that's just kinda how it goes sometimes.
Had a perfect day fly fishing with great local knowledge and professionalism.
Good guys and plenty of fish. Would go again.

Went Fly fishing with Capt Clery, he explained me calmly all the deatails of the morning(spots, flies, rods). He coached really good until I was able to do the "strip set" by myself. Boat is perfect for fly fishing & we landed 3 tarpons.
We were put on many tarpon! Our guide went out of his way to get us on fish!!! The tarpon did not want to cooperate! I would definitely book again! It was an amazing experience!
