Captain Thorny's Fishing Charters
Make an adventure out of your next trip in Burlington and go fishing with Captain Thorny's Fishing Charters. Captain Rob will be your guide, giving you access to their sportfishing experience.
These waters hold game fish like Lake Trout, Atlantic Salmon, Northern Pike, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout (Steelhead), Walleye, and more, depending on when you go. You'll target your catch by light tackle fishing, trolling, jigging, or maybe something more specialized in this area.
Your adventure begins aboard a 22' C-Hawk downeast with room for 4 passengers. It has downriggers, and all the essentials. There's a toilet on board for your convenience. Rods, reels, and tackle are included, as well as lures.
You'll have the help of a First Mate to put you on fish. Mates work hard to make your trip count, so a 10–20% tip is customary.
You will need to get a local fishing license before the trip. This information is usually available online, or you can ask the captain. Some species might be protected or require a tag to keep them, so make sure you know what to expect. The crew cleans your catch on board.
You can't go wrong when you bring sunscreen (non-spray), a hat, bottled water, and sunglasses. Alcohol is allowed in moderation, just be sure to avoid hard liquor as well as glass bottles.

I recently took my children on a fishing charter with Captain Rob, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Rob was incredibly accommodating, offering flexibility with our departure time and maintaining excellent communication throughout the entire process. Both Rob and his first mate (Matt) were friendly, professional, and absolutely fantastic with my children. Rob was especially patient taking the time to teach them, answer their questions, and help them learn throughout the trip. His enthusiasm and encouragement, made the experience even more exciting for them and kept them engaged the entire time. They were punctual, well prepared, and made sure everyone felt comfortable and had a great time on the water. One thing that really stood out was that the Captain cleaned and filleted all of our fish for us to take home afterward. This was a huge help and greatly appreciated. Overall, this was a wonderful family experience, and I would not hesitate to book with Rob again and we are looking forward to trying a different season and fishery. I highly, highly recommend this charter to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, professional, and family, friendly, fishing experience!
We've never fished Champlain and wanted to hook into lake trout and salmon during our week trip here, trying to figure ot out ourselves would've been impossible. Captain Thorny was fantastic, put is on lakers within 10 minutes, then great fishing the rest of the day. Took us to the special spot for salmon and sure enough, bam, bam bam. Jumping out of the water, great fights, tons of fun. His knowlegde of the lake, the fisheries and its ecosystem was super interesting to hear. Really nice, a pleasure to be on the boat with him and mate Matt. Highly recommended.

Wow! I have chartered alot of guides and boats over the years and IMO Capt. Rob and Shawn were both first class. They engaged my son and made the focus on him which was such a highlight. He even caught the largest atlantic salmon in our group. Both are also bery knowledgable on the condition and history of the lake which I appreciated. 10/10 and hope to be back next summer.
We booked this fishing trip on a whim when we were visiting Vermont and we are so happy we did! From the start, communication was great. Rob and Matt were intelligent, informative, helpful and really enjoyed what they do. They made the experience completely enjoyable and stress free. We had an absolutely beautiful day on the water catching a total of 20+ fish (salmon and lake trout). Rob even cleaned and filleted our fish so we could take them home to eat. We had a blast and we are already trying to plan the next fishing trip with them!
The day was expected to be the hottest day of the year, reaching in the upper 90s. We decided to get an early start at 5 AM. The weather turned out amazing. With the early start we missed the heat. The salmon were not biting. So we moved to lake trout and caught lots of lake trout, with the largest one just short of eleven pounds. Doubled up at times. Captain Rob and Shaun took great care of me and worked very hard to make it a great day. I highly recommend them.
We had an incredible time with Rob and his mate Jamie! Rob was Professional, hard-working, and knowledgeable about Lake Champlain and all types of fish. He worked nonstop, switching out the reels and getting us fish on! My boys caught Salmon, HUGE Lake Trout, and Walleye! Rob made the day educational, teaching the boys how to reel in lake fish successfully. We had an exceptional day and cant wait to book a spring Salmon trip next year!
This was our first charter and and it was unforgettable! Capt Rob Thorne and his first Mate Frank were everything we could have asked for!! Super flexible and responsive! Rob had us on fish in less than an hour and they never stopped coming. We landed so many that we had to start throwing them back! Captain Rob is the man and knows his stuff. I look forward to booking our next Charter with Capt Thorne!
the Captain worked with us pertaining to weather and adjusting times to fit our schedule since we came up from PA. We had a great day and caught tons of fish. When salmon werent biting Captain quickly pivoted to Lake Trout and we caught plenty. Ended our time with drum and walleye ! Great day, great Captain and Mate and an overall great experience.

The Captain was very knowledgeable in his profession. He got us on a lot of nice sized lake trout. No Salmon ( to late in the season) But he gave tried knowing it was a long shot. Great time fishing with my Brother and my two daughters. I or should I say we, will be back in the spring to do it again. We will go out with same captain and crew. Hootie hoooooo

By far the best experience ever. Rob was so knowledgeable and professional. He worked the gear like no other and made my kids feel comfortable and helped them the whole time catching fish. He put us on 4 species and The bonus was catching fish. I would definitely recommend him 100 percent for the best lake chaplain experience u will ever have.
